Overcoming Compulsive Overeating
Reaching for food when you are not hungry is a symptom.
The spectrum of eating when not hungry ranges from light daytime grazing to heavy late night binging.
The root cause of this symptom varies from person to person. Once the root cause is identified, lasting change can take place.
Some common signs of a compulsive overeater:
• You spend your day fighting your desire to eat.
• Your mental energy consumed by thoughts about what to eat, when to eat and your weight.
• You frequently reach for food even when you're not hungry.
• You eat to the point of physical discomfort.
• You feel fat regardless of whether you are thin, average weight or overweight.
This cycle of obsessive, consuming thoughts about food and your body can be changed and replaced with healthy habits and encouraging, compassionate thoughts.
Lasting feelings of health and well-being are possible. Feeling good about your body is possible. Being at peace with food and the reflection in the mirror is possible.
There are many different reasons for overeating or engaging in the diet/binge cycle. Most of these reasons are a type of coping mechanism. You may overeat as a way to cope with your emotions, life stressors, fear of intimacy or loneliness. You may feel out of control and use food to help calm yourself and reduce anxiety.
If you don't obsess about food or your body, but overeat due to ingrained habits, a hectic schedule or other situational factors, learning new behaviors systematically and incrementally can help bring you great success in reducing compulsive overeating, and increasing energy and health.
Counseling for Success can teach you many effective techniques, coping skills, and new health promoting behaviors in a supportive, caring environment.
