Dr. David Speigel at Stanford School of Medicine has written several articles regarding the application of clinical hypnosis in the treatment of pain.  Clinical hypnosis has been used for over a hundred years to reduce and alleviate pain. Pain control is one of the oldest and most widespread uses of clinical hypnosis.

According to Dr. Speigel there are four ways clinical hypnosis can be used to reduce pain:

1. Alter how the brain responds to the pain signal.  You can turn down a part of the
brain called the anterior cingulate gyrus that helps you focus and pay attention, altering
the perception of the pain signal.

2. Alter the emotional response to pain.  Pain is the physical signal, suffering is the
emotional response to that signal.  Hypnosis can help reduce the emotional response of
suffering and reduce anxiety, anger, worry or frustration.

3. Shift attention.  Hypnosis can help you shift attention to other senses or external
stimuli.  If what we focus on increases, when we shift our focus off the pain, people tend
to experience a reduction of pain.

4. Elicit relaxation.  Hypnosis induces relaxation, thus reducing muscular tension that
exacerbates pain, soreness, tenderness, and discomfort.
