How do people change?
First we need to understand how people learn so we can apply these learning strategies to facilitate change. Information is programmed through our senses (sight, smell, sound, etc). Recall the last time you needed to work overtime or had a tight deadline. Notice your automatic thoughts such as, "Oh no, not again" or "This is too much," and notice your automatic feelings like tension or fatigue. This is your subjective experience.
Now imagine if we were to change some elements, such as the thought of a big bonus or a tropical vacation in a few days. Do you already notice you feel better, more motivated and happier? Or what if, starting today you excelled and thrived under pressure? These thoughts are simple examples of repatterning. Performing under pressure can be a positive challenge. Pushing through the most difficult situations can be exciting and invigorating. Changing your perception and thoughts can significantly alter your emotional state, increasing positive behaviors, optimism and stamina.
NLP involves changing the "neurological configuration," sensory encoding which can be words, images, sounds, smells. Add in a few more elements in person, and you can begin to see how NLP is a very effective modality.
